Peking University Third Hospital Breast Surgery

　　Since the founding of the Peking University Third Hospital in 1958, General Surgery dept. has contributed a lot to breast surgery, in diagnosis, treatment, education and research. On February 8th, 2003, General Surgery dept. set up the Breast Surgery dept., whose cooperation with Plastic Surgery dept. and Oncology dept. makes it a breast diseases professional group. What’s more, the close relationship between Breast Surgery dept. and other depts., such as Radiology dept., Ultrasonic dept., Nuclear medicine dept., Laboratory dept., Pathology dept., Traditional Chinese Medicine dept. and Pharmacy dept., helps strengthen the Breast dept. in comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and research.
　　 In the diagnosis of Breast disease, we have introduced the world the most advanced Molybdenum X-ray machine. Both the quality of photo and the accuracy of diagnosis are high. Meanwhile we also introduced Molybdenum X-ray prostration machine to precisely locate mammary pathological changes in solving problem in treatment caused by hardly locating mammary affection.
　　 In the long-term clinical practice, diagnosis level of ultrasonic in mammary disease has been gradually improved. In addition to accurately diagnose normal mammary disease, ultrasonic could also discover tiny tumors and analyze them by quality, in order to help the patients get early treatment and regular observation by qualitative puncture the tiny tumors.
　　 At present, Breast Surgery dept. of our hospital constantly improves breast–duct endoscope technique, which could discover tiny pathological changes in duct, and protect the patients, holding the principle of minimally invasive surgery of nipple destroy, to help the patients to get early treatment and regular observation.
　　 For the patients with breast benign tumor, we could use Mammotome instrument to do the minimally invasive surgery, i.e., to guarantee not only complete resection but no scar as well.
　　For the patients with breast carcinoma, we adopt several advanced surgery technique, such as breast carcinoma breast-conserving treatment, the test of which is very success. Mammaplasty was developed around 1990. Besides, immediate mammaplasty can avoid re-operation and ensure not only the cure of cancer, but also the conservation of the breast structure. So, we use immediate mammaplasty and modified radical mastectomy simultaneously.
　　 Biopsy are taken in several methods, and later sent to Pathology department to make several immediate accurate diagnoses, so as to make a decisive guidance for chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and provide accurate evidence for comprehensive treatment of mammary malignant diseases.
　　 In radiotherapy for patients treated with immediate mammaplasty, Radiology dept. adopts several techniques to help patients to get a comprehensive treatment, and conserve breast morphology.
　　 In tumor chemotherapy, we have made definite indication and treatment protocols for several new treatments for mammary malignant tumor, especially for new adjuvant chemotherapy and new adjuvant endocrine therapy. And we find that the postoperative tumor are obviously diminished or even disappeared. Meanwhile, we have done a lot in endocrine therapy, especially in postoperative aromatase inhibitor treatment and advanced breast carcinoma endocrine therapy, and obtained good curative effect.
　　 At present, we constantly improve the diagnosis and treatment level for breast carcinoma and obtain several research funds, including national natural science foundation and Wu Jieping medical foundation, with which we do research on breast carcinoma regularly and individual treatment based on molecular typing and gene chip, and to combine research work with clinical practice.
　　 In breast carcinoma surgery, our developing direction includes investigating several mammaplasty techniques based on radical operation, studying the breast conservation protocols and breast surgery with breast-duct endoscopy technique.
　　 In breast carcinoma chemotherapy, we will investigate targeted therapy.
　　 Breast dept. attends several international and domestic conferences regularly, and has published several professional articles and reviews in domestic core journals. It has also built long- term cooperation with M. D. Anderson tumor centre, the largest tumor centre in the world, and sends doctors there to study regularly.
